John Deere Classic: Preview

Slightly late but here is a preview of the John Deere Classic, brought to you by Win McMurry.

AT&T Highlights 2009

A brief recap of the AT&T National, won by Tiger Woods. Enjoy.

AT&T National Preview: Woods to Work Wonders?

Anthony Kim is back this week to defend the title he won in 2008, when he shot 65 in the final round to defeat Freddy Jacobson and notch up his second win of the year. Kim has yet to win in 2009 but he is coming off a T11th at last weeks Travelers Championship. It is also worth noting that 6 of Kim’s 8 rounds at Congressional have been in the 60’s.

It is the third year of the Tiger Woods hosted event at the Congressional Blue Course and the course this year is playing firm and fast, with deep rough. When asked, Woods smiled, acknowledging that he played a part in how the course is set up and how he dislikes the idea of having to shoot 66 every day to win a golf tournament (Can’t agree more!). On the face of it, it does not look like last years -12 winning score will be attainable this year.

Jim Furyk has finished 3rd at the AT&T National in 2007 and 2008 and was also T5 when the US Open was held at Congressional so he clearly likes the course. Add to the fact that his caddy, Fluff, is a member of Congressional and they are an interesting proposition this week. One must remember though that it is 2007 since Furyk has won on the US Tour.

Paul Goydos is also on a fine run of form with three top 5’s in his last 4 events. He did miss the cut at Colonial but I guess that’s what you get if you back Goydos…a complete gamble but he should entice a few people this week to part with their cash. Robert Allenby is another outsider but he has finished T6 and T3 in his past 2 years at the AT&T National so he obviously likes the course. Allenby though has not won since 2001 on Tour so perhaps he might be worth backing for a top 10 as opposed to an outright win. Mike Weir seems to do well on tough courses also and is in a good run of form recently so he could also go close this week.

Conclusion

There is only one winner for me this week, Tiger Woods. I have not backed him yet this year but I fancy him to go well this week. Nearing full fitness now, he appears to be getting better and better. His driving is still a concern as he is liable to spray a few. However, with the course firm and fast, I think everyone will miss their fair share of fairways so a sharp short game will be needed and Woods fits the bill here. He has been complaining of not holing enough putts but I think that will change this week. At 2/1, his odds are awful as usual but if you want my honest opinion, he will be crowning himself as champion this week, especially when you consider he has the course set up to suit his game!

Hunter Mahan at 18/1 and in fantastic form would be my choice if I look beyond Woods. Another win certainly looks on the horizon for Mahan and is a good each way bet this week. Finally, looking at the outsiders, Paul Goydos is at 60/1 and could be an interesting gamble this week.

See below some memorable moments from the AT&T over the years:

Pole Position for Perry at Travelers Championship

Kenny Perry triumphed at this weeks Travelers Championship but due to issues with my satellite I didn’t get to see the golf. If you, like me, missed the golf, well never fear because here are the highlights from Rd3 and Rd 4, not to mention the Monday Backspin edition from the PGA Tour, brought to you by none other than…..yes you guessed it, Win McMurry.

Still waiting to hear anything back from Win after my public plea for an interview…any day now!

Travelers CHampionship Rd 2….Rain, Rain, Rain!

I’m beginning to think the great man upstairs is having a bit of a laugh with us. I’m here in Ireland, yes Ireland, the place where you guys think the sun shines approx 3 days per annum and the remainder of the year is filled with dark clouds and pouring rain. Meanwhile in America, the sun shines constantly and there is not a puff of wind. Well, that has not being the case the past few weeks.

While the players battled the elements last week, I was out golfing in gorgeous weather in my local town of Clonakilty. This week, I have again had the fortune of playing golf in amazing weather. When I come home, all I see on the television is rain, rain and more rain from the US Golf.

The Travelers Championship is again affected this week but hopefully, you guys in America will get a run of decent weather and we can actually get a tournament finished in regular time. Here is our favorite presenter Win McMurry with a brief recap.

Travelers Campionship Rd1 & a Plea to Win!

I thought Kenny Perry would go well last week at the US Open but alas, it wasn’t to be and instead, Perry has come flying out of the blocks at this weeks Travelers Championship, shooting a superb -9 round of 61. After reaching the turn in 29 and adding a birdie on 10, it really looked like a 59 was on the cards. Still, I’m sure he will settle for 61!

Elsewhere, last weeks Champion Lucas Glover and runner up Ricky Barnes confirm that golf really is a game of confidence as they shot a pair of 65’s. Considering he left the US Open slip through his grasp last week, what neutral wouldn’t be pleased to see Barnes lift the title this week?

As always, this video is brought to you by PGA Tour on YouTube and presented by the beautiful Win McMurry. Win, if you are reading this, why not do a quick interview for us all here at “We Get Golf” who would love to hear from you……of course I’m guessing Ms. McMurry is not reading this but if anyone knows her, pass on the message ;-). The email address, as always, is wegetgolf@gmail.com

Travelers Championship Preview

The US Tour moves to Hartford Connetticut this week for the Travelers Championship, with Stewart Cink defending his title, which he won last year in a playoff against Hunter Mahan and Tommy Armour III. Cink will attempt to become the first player since Phil Mickelson in 2002 to successfully defend his Travelers Championship title. Last year, he became just the fourth player to record multiple wins at the event. The others are Billy Casper, Arnold Palmer and Phil Mickelson.

The betting for the event looks like follows: Hunter Mahan (14/1), Sergio Garcia (18/1), Kenny Perry (20/1), Zach Johnson (20/1), Vijay Singh (20/1), David Toms (22/1), Stewart Cink (25/1), Anthony Kim (28/1) and Brian Gay (33/1).

US Open Review and Interviews

Just in case you were in the planet Mars or something over the past week and missed the US Open Golf, here is a video to get you up to speed. That should now bring an end to this years Open so the focus will switch now to the next major, the British Open…..Praying that our man Paddy Harrington finds some form quickly but who could rule out the chances of Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell after their major performances this year thus far?

Hunter Mahan: Whats in the Bag?

Wow, I didn’t think any of the pro’s were using the old Ping Wedges. I am a bit amazed to be honest. I always thought they looked a bit chunky and cumbersome. If it’s good enough for Hunter Mahan though, it’s good enough for me.
