We Get Golf Golf Society…Interested?

I want first of all to take this opportunity to thank you all for taking the time to read my golf blog and thank especially the subscribers and those that leave their comments. The blog has been read by people in every corner of the globe and some of the personal emails I have been receiving are flattering to say the least. Going forward, I hope to continue to keep you entertained and up to date with what is going on in the golfing world.

On idea I am toying with at the moment is setting up a “We Get Golf” Golf Society. Initially, this would be based in Ireland but in time, the goal would be to stage a few competitions abroad also to incorporate my international readers. At this stage, this is just an idea so I need to find out if people are interested. In order to do so, please subscribe to my blog (go to the homepage of the blog and you can subscribe by entering your details on the right hand side). Once you have done this, why not drop me an email to let me know if you would be interested in taking part in a potential golf society and any idea further ideas you may have.

I would personally love to be able to meet and greet my readers so please, get in touch whether you are based in Ireland, UK, US Canada or even further afield!

US Open Rd 1 - Early Update

A brief update from every males favorite presenter, Win McMurry.

Technical Difficulties - My Apologies

Apologies to all for the difficulties we have been having over the past few days. A software engineer was doing work on a different site of mine and managed to take down my entire blog. Therefore, you may have been having difficulties accessing it over the past few days.

Now we have the main page up and running again. However, none of the old posts are not accessible at the moment. I am having someone look into the issue (a different engineer dont worry!!) so I hopefully the issue will be resolved shortly.

Thanks for your continued support.

James

Alongside Payne Stewart at Waterville

Most of you will know at this stage my admiration for the late Payne Stewart so it was great last week to stand alongside his statue at Waterville Golf Club, Kerry, Ireland and look at the various photos of him around the clubhouse.

It was my first time playing the beautifully rugged Waterville and I think I can safely say it is the most difficult course I have played. If you are few yards off the tight fairways, well then you’d better say your prayers because there is a good chance you might not find your ball. With the wind blowing, if you are not used to links, club selection is a nightmare and any ball hit high in the air deviates all over the place.

As you can guess by now, I didn’t quite master the place but it was a great eye-opener before the World Invitational Father and Son Tournament in August, at the same venue. There we will be completing alongside the likes of Dan Marino and JP McManus so it would be nice to do well. Somehow though, I don’t think I will be having any bets with those gentlemen…..my pockets aren’t that deep yet!

St Judes Classic Preview: Toms Tipped for Top!

This weeks PGA Tour event is the St. Jude Classic which will again take place at TPC Southwind, the 21st consecutive season it has hosted the event. Last year,  the par-70 TPC Southwind showed its teeth as the field was an average of more than 2 over for the week. Two of the holes ranked among the top 50 most-difficult on the PGA TOUR in 2008.

Two men making headline grabbing returns for different reasons are Phil Mickelson and John Daly. It is an emotional return for Mickelson after his wife Amy was recently diagnosed with cancer. It would be a truly wonderful story if “Lefty” could win this week in what will surely be a roller coaster week emotionally for the family loving American. John Daly returns in different circumstances, after his 6 month suspension. After listening to Daly speak, it does appear like his head is in the right place as he spoke of taking things for granted and the opportunity the lies ahead in order for him to resurrect his career. While he was quite honest, the big question remains about whether or not Daly can maintain his focus on golf and avoid the other demons surrounding his life. While I deeply hope he can progress again from here because he is such a talent, I can’t help but remain skeptical.

So, who can perform well this week? David Toms has been a little disappointing any time I have tipped him this season but is difficult to oppose this week. He is a two time winner of this tournament having lifted the title in 2003 and 2004 and is currently #1 in driving accuracy and #4 in scoring average this season. Toms has also finished in the top 10, six of the last seven years so he clearly is fond of the place. He did however fail to make the top 10 last year and the course has been lengthened since his wins here. At 14/1 also, it could be argued he does not represent enough value as he has not won on tour since 2006. However I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt this week.

Elsewhere, Brian Gay is at 35/1 and possibly offers the best value of the entire field. He has a good track record here and is third in driving accuracy this season with 72% of fairways hit. His last competitive round was also a 64 at the Crowne Plaza invitational so he looks to be moving in the right direction again after his huge 10-shot win at the Verizon Heritage. By his own admission, he likes it when the wind picks up and the course plays hard so this week could see him prosper. I think he is worth an each way bet at 35/1.

Finally, some other notable players to look out for are Justin Leonard, who like Toms has a fantastic record here. I debated tipping him but marginally favored Toms…marginally! Do not be surprised to see Leonard hovering near the top of the leaderboard come Sunday evening. Sergio Garcia has also seen his putting improve over the past few weeks at Sawgrass and the European Open. If this continues to be the case this week, Sergio will not be far away. He is an exceptional talent and it cant be long before he starts challenging again. A decent finish this week and it will be certainly put him back in with a chance of lifting the upcoming US Open.

Michelle Wei: En Route to the Top!

It is no secret that I am a big fan of Michelle Wei. For a lady of only 19 years of age, it seems like she has already been part of enough incidents to last a lifetime. Coming through Q-school in such impressive fashion was the kick-start Wei needed. I commented here at the beginning of the year that she was a winner in waiting and I am still convinced of this. She will win an LPGA Tour event and when she does, it will take so much weight off the young lady’s shoulders, we could see her really flourish.

You have to remember Michelle Wei is only 19 years of age. What she has achieved already is highly commendable yet most look at her as a somewhat failed promising star….nonsense! She has plenty of time yet and I believe the hard knocks she has endured so far will stand her in good stead as she progresses.

I look forward to watching Michelle Wei challenge the best ladies in the game of golf. Just picture the scenario: Michelle Wei decimating the field en route to another major victory, booming drives down the middle and sticking wedges to gimme distance. Then switch over the TV channel and watch Tiger Woods destroy another major field as he hits towering 3-irons to 3 feet and holes putt after putt…..not a bad nights viewing and better yet, it could be coming to home near you sooner than you anticiapted…..stay tuned!

Get off Lowry’s back!

After his heroics in the Irish Open, Shane Lowry’s introduction to the professional world of golf has been somewhat difficult. Having missed the cut in his first two professional events, the young man from Offaly, Ireland has tongues wagging as they debate his judgement in turning pro so soon.

Personally, I find this a pointless argument because the simple truth of the matter is, we will never know. If Lowry goes on to continually miss cuts it will be seen as a mistake. However, what if he misses the next 20 cuts before turning it around and establishing himself as one of the top players in the game? Well, then it would be said that all the missed cuts were a fantastic introduction into the world of professional golf, right? One only has to remember Justin Rose when he turned professional. The English man had a terrible run of missed cuts before evolving into one of Europe’s top golfers.

For this reason, we need to lay-off Shane Lowry. Let him get on with his career and stop pretending we know what is right for him. We don’t and we never will. All we can hope for is that Lowry sticks to his task of continually improving as a golfer. It is all a learning curve and in time, Lowry may or may not reach that elevated status in world golf but one thing that cannot be taken away from him is his win in the Irish Open and his right to compete on the Tour as a result.

We Get Golf is routing for you Shane!

Strong Start to 2009 sees Footjoy out in Front again!

Following on from our review of the Footjoy SYNR-G shoes and the flagging of www.buyfootjoygolfshoes as your number one source for obtaining both new and reasonably priced Footjoy’s, I though I would flag this article I came across earlier on www.europeantour.com:

“Latest independent figures reveal FootJoy’s continued dominance of the golf shoe market, as top four best selling shoes in the UK all bear the name of the #1 Shoe in Golf

FootJoy, the #1 Shoe and Glove in Golf, once again recorded high market shares within the UK golf shoe sales market for the first quarter of 2009, according to the most recent Golf Datatech UK retail audit. FootJoy dominated the volume brand share at 53.4%, way ahead of the next brand with just 14.8%. With a whole raft of updated styles in the best selling models combined with high performance product introductions and high profile ambassadors like Padraig Harrington and Rory McIlroy showcasing the brand on Tour, FootJoy has once again set the standard for the new season.

Such is the strength and depth of its product line-up, FootJoy shoes are also dominant in the breakdown of total unit model share sales for the year to date, with the top four and seven of the top ten coming from the FootJoy portfolio. The AQL® remains the nation’s favourite golf shoe with 17.4% of the market, followed by the DryJoys® golf shoes with 8.9%. The full top ten list is as follows:

1. FootJoy AQL (17.4%)
2. FootJoy DryJoys (8.9%)
3. FootJoy Contour Series™ (8.1%)
4. FootJoy GreenJoys® (6.2%)
5. Competitor Model A (4.9%)
6. Competitor Model B (2.9%)
7. FootJoy SoftJoys® (2.8%)
8. FootJoy LoPro Collection™ (2.7%)
9. Competitor Model C (2.5%)
10.FootJoy ReelFit® (1.9%)

The continued popularity of the AQL has seen this range alone sell more units than the nearest competitor brand’s total sales across all of its models in the first quarter of 2009. While AQL and DryJoys continue to lead the way another success story is the new LoPro; the sporty and ultra-comfortable shoe launched in January this year is already the 8th best selling golf shoe in the UK.

The rapid success of the LoPro underlines FootJoy’s unquestionable strength in depth and broad appeal. The younger, casual and more contemporary designs like LoPro and ReelFit, plus more modern style options in DryJoys and AQL, complement the more traditional styles more readily associated with the #1 Shoe in Golf. Another FootJoy innovation, the new SYNR-G™, is also ahead of forecast following the high profile launch at the start of the year and, despite a premium price tag, has been in big demand. An effective advertising campaign, featuring triple Major winner Padraig Harrington, combined with the support of FootJoy’s retail partners has ensured that SYNR-G has been highly visible in golf shops the length and breadth of the UK.

So, there you have it, Footjoy continue to dominate as the #1 shoe in golf. Hardly a surprise when you consider everybody you see on a golf course is wearing Footjoy’s. If you dont have a pair of Footjoy Golf Shoes, well perhaps you should consider switching over. A great place to look and source Footjoy Golf Shoes can be accessed by clicking here.

The Ryder Cup - Just an Exhibition….Hardly!

Who remembers the 1969 Ryder Cup where 18 of the 32 matches went down to the final green at Royal Birkdale? In what was such a tense and competitive event, Jack Nicklaus displayed an incredible moment of sportsmanship when he conceded Tony Jacklins putt on the 18th to halve the Ryder Cup. However, some of his teammates and especially Captain Sam Snead were less than impressed such was the desire to win.

Or what of the 1991 Battle on Kiawah Island? Following on from the feud between Seve Ballesteros and Paul Azinger over allegations of Cheating at the Belfry, the tension this year rose to unprecedented levels. The US Team came out dressed in Khaki baseball caps as though preparing for a war. In fact, a war on the shore is exactly what we got with the American Golfers criticised for going completely overboard.

1999 again saw the Americans being accused of some gamesmanship. Trailing going into the final day, the Americans seemed to be possessed and were fist pumping, dancing, jumping and just about doing anything they could to get the crowd involved. It worked but was however marred when the American team and wives ran on to the green when Justin Leonard holed a monster putt against Olazabal, when Olazabal still had a putt to halve the hole.

So, when the young talented Irishman with goofy looking hair, Rory McIlroy, comes out and says the Ryder Cup is not a priority for him, you begin to wonder. When he claims it is just an exhibition match, you question has he not been following the Ryder Cup over the years or something? Captain Montgomerie had to smile in front of the cameras after to explain that Rory was young and would learn once he had played in the competition. However, I cant help but think Monty behind closed doors would have been gritting his teeth at the thought of a young kid denouncing the Ryder Cup as simply an exhibition.

Rory McIlroy is a fantastic young talent and someone who is sure to challenge the very best in golf and I cant wait to see it. We do not need him however down-playing the Ryder Cup as though he is some experienced campaigner. Think of all the passionate great players we have seen in the Ryder Cup….Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Payne Stewart, Christy O’Connor Snr & Jnr, Seve Ballersteros, Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie….the list goes on and on. I proclaim Tiger Woods has the same attitude as Rory with the Ryder Cup. Last September, the number one golfer in the world was missing due to injury but, surprise surprise, the US Team won. Why? Passion!! Pure and simple passion! Think Anthony Kim, think Boo Weekley, think J.B Holmes……even Jim Furyk started dancing (well we are not sure what he was doing but his legs and arms were moving all over the place).

You see, the Ryder Cup is much more than an exhibition. It is each and every Europeans or Amercians right to claim thay have the best Tour in the World. It is true the matches sometimes go overboard but who cares (provided its kept inside the ropes)? I want to see that…I want to see Rory hole a 20ft and pump his fist at his American opponent. Golf is a game based on etiquette but every two years, at the Ryder Cup, it becomes a war, a competitive hatred develops but that is all it is…competitive. I want to see Sergio Garcia hand the smug little Kim an ass whopping the next time because that is exactly the faith he suffered when they met last time….but wasn’t it great for the game? A young cocky Kim strutting his stuff to the adoring fans, a gladiator taking centre stage at the Colosseum. Or Boo Weekley riding his driver down the first fairway….Fantastic!

So Rory, we will forgive your blasphemous words but be warned!! If you think you can walk into the Ryder Cup without something to prove, you are sadly mistaken. If you cant unerstand that every golfer the world over would give anything for the opportunity to play in the Ryder Cup, then you are sadly mistaken. If you think the passionate Europeans will forgive you for thinking the Ryder Cup can be treated with the individualistic and nonchalant contempt I believe Woods has shown toward the Ryder Cup, you are very much mistaken! We want the Ryder Cup back and with Captain Montgomerie on board, the passion and fight is back. Poulter, Garcia et all will be reborn and the war will commence!

This is competiton. This is Passion. This is the Ryder Cup!!
