Bobby Wyatt…..Take A Bow Son!

All we hear on tour recently is talk of 59. Paul Goydos did it a few weeks ago, Stuart Allenby matched it on Sunday and over in Ireland, Ross Fisher had a good aul crack of it as well but had to settle for a 61. As impressive as that might be, one man decided that he wasn’t going to settle for 59, or 58 for that matter!

17 year old Bobby Wyatt, playing in the Alabama Boys State Junior Championship, shot a remarkable 14 under par 57 in the second round. Whats more, he missed a very hole-able putt on the last for 56. Wyatt’s round eventually will indeed be considered the world record as it passes both evaluation criteria: the course measures at least 6,500 yards (measuring 6,628 yards that day), and it also came during a competition, as opposed to a friendly round.

Needless to say, Wyatt went on to win his 4th consecutive Boys State Championship as he followed the 57 with a rather mundane 70 by his standards. Perhaps we are witnessing a star in the making and for some of you, remember where you heard it first folks! What impressed me more (if it is indeed possible to be more impressed than a 57 itself) was the interview with Wyatt after where he proclaimed there was always room to improve and that he was heading back on the range that evening. It is that dedication, hunger and perseverance which will surely ensure a bright future for the talented youngster and it outlines the incredibly high standard that exists in the world of golf today. I look forward to watching the progression continue
