After his heroics in the Irish Open, Shane Lowry’s introduction to the professional world of golf has been somewhat difficult. Having missed the cut in his first two professional events, the young man from Offaly, Ireland has tongues wagging as they debate his judgement in turning pro so soon.

Personally, I find this a pointless argument because the simple truth of the matter is, we will never know. If Lowry goes on to continually miss cuts it will be seen as a mistake. However, what if he misses the next 20 cuts before turning it around and establishing himself as one of the top players in the game? Well, then it would be said that all the missed cuts were a fantastic introduction into the world of professional golf, right? One only has to remember Justin Rose when he turned professional. The English man had a terrible run of missed cuts before evolving into one of Europe’s top golfers.

For this reason, we need to lay-off Shane Lowry. Let him get on with his career and stop pretending we know what is right for him. We don’t and we never will. All we can hope for is that Lowry sticks to his task of continually improving as a golfer. It is all a learning curve and in time, Lowry may or may not reach that elevated status in world golf but one thing that cannot be taken away from him is his win in the Irish Open and his right to compete on the Tour as a result.
