Pole Position for Perry at Travelers Championship

Kenny Perry triumphed at this weeks Travelers Championship but due to issues with my satellite I didn’t get to see the golf. If you, like me, missed the golf, well never fear because here are the highlights from Rd3 and Rd 4, not to mention the Monday Backspin edition from the PGA Tour, brought to you by none other than…..yes you guessed it, Win McMurry.

Still waiting to hear anything back from Win after my public plea for an interview…any day now!

Dougherty Oozes class in Germany

Nick Dougherty, the young Englishman who has always shown huge potential, shot a fantastic final round of 64 yesterday to win the BMW International Open in Germany. Dougherty, who lost his way somewhat after the death of his mother, secured his first win in 2 years by overcoming his playing partners Bernhard Langer and Retief Goosen. In the end, his nearest challenger was Argentinian Rafa Echenique, who holed his 243 yard second shot for an albatross on the final hole to complete the back nine in only 27 shots.

Speaking on his dramatic win, Dougherty said “To go and beat two Major champions you’re playing with and fend off a very exciting finish from Rafa, that really caught me by surprise a little bit,” Dougherty said of Echenique’s efforts. “I kind of thought I had done the deal once I hit the green on 16. But delighted with what I did and the way I went about my business.”

Dougherty reminds me of Ian Poulter somewhat in terms of confidence. You feel that if the can just win one, they can go on to win many more! That could now be the case for Dougherty. Consistency and a regular challenge for European honors will be Dougherty’s priority first but once he can achieve this, which I believe he can, majors will no doubt become part of his main goals. He, like Casey, Poulter, Davis and Rose are all fantastic English players and I cant imagine we will have to wait much longer to see them in the winners enclosure again.

Travelers CHampionship Rd 2….Rain, Rain, Rain!

I’m beginning to think the great man upstairs is having a bit of a laugh with us. I’m here in Ireland, yes Ireland, the place where you guys think the sun shines approx 3 days per annum and the remainder of the year is filled with dark clouds and pouring rain. Meanwhile in America, the sun shines constantly and there is not a puff of wind. Well, that has not being the case the past few weeks.

While the players battled the elements last week, I was out golfing in gorgeous weather in my local town of Clonakilty. This week, I have again had the fortune of playing golf in amazing weather. When I come home, all I see on the television is rain, rain and more rain from the US Golf.

The Travelers Championship is again affected this week but hopefully, you guys in America will get a run of decent weather and we can actually get a tournament finished in regular time. Here is our favorite presenter Win McMurry with a brief recap.

Travelers Campionship Rd1 & a Plea to Win!

I thought Kenny Perry would go well last week at the US Open but alas, it wasn’t to be and instead, Perry has come flying out of the blocks at this weeks Travelers Championship, shooting a superb -9 round of 61. After reaching the turn in 29 and adding a birdie on 10, it really looked like a 59 was on the cards. Still, I’m sure he will settle for 61!

Elsewhere, last weeks Champion Lucas Glover and runner up Ricky Barnes confirm that golf really is a game of confidence as they shot a pair of 65’s. Considering he left the US Open slip through his grasp last week, what neutral wouldn’t be pleased to see Barnes lift the title this week?

As always, this video is brought to you by PGA Tour on YouTube and presented by the beautiful Win McMurry. Win, if you are reading this, why not do a quick interview for us all here at “We Get Golf” who would love to hear from you……of course I’m guessing Ms. McMurry is not reading this but if anyone knows her, pass on the message ;-). The email address, as always, is wegetgolf@gmail.com

Travelers Championship Preview

The US Tour moves to Hartford Connetticut this week for the Travelers Championship, with Stewart Cink defending his title, which he won last year in a playoff against Hunter Mahan and Tommy Armour III. Cink will attempt to become the first player since Phil Mickelson in 2002 to successfully defend his Travelers Championship title. Last year, he became just the fourth player to record multiple wins at the event. The others are Billy Casper, Arnold Palmer and Phil Mickelson.

The betting for the event looks like follows: Hunter Mahan (14/1), Sergio Garcia (18/1), Kenny Perry (20/1), Zach Johnson (20/1), Vijay Singh (20/1), David Toms (22/1), Stewart Cink (25/1), Anthony Kim (28/1) and Brian Gay (33/1).

US Open Review and Interviews

Just in case you were in the planet Mars or something over the past week and missed the US Open Golf, here is a video to get you up to speed. That should now bring an end to this years Open so the focus will switch now to the next major, the British Open…..Praying that our man Paddy Harrington finds some form quickly but who could rule out the chances of Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell after their major performances this year thus far?

Hunter Mahan: Whats in the Bag?

Wow, I didn’t think any of the pro’s were using the old Ping Wedges. I am a bit amazed to be honest. I always thought they looked a bit chunky and cumbersome. If it’s good enough for Hunter Mahan though, it’s good enough for me.

Glover Holds Nerve to Take US Open Title!

Yesterday I spoke of how I felt this years US Open had been somewhat undermined by the elements but there was no doubting the calibre of Lucas Glover’s performance throughout the entire week and in particular, his final 3 holes yesterday. When Geoff Ogilvy won the US Open a few years ago, many of the games top players in the world, including Phil Mickelson, Padraig Harrington, Jim Furyk and Colin Montgomerie, failed to hold their nerve coming down the final few holes so it would have been completely understandable if Glover had frittered away a few shots over the last 3 holes yesterday. However, the 29 year old American did nothing of the sort and instead played them in one under which is fantastic achievement.

I debated yesterday what would be a good score for the final round leaders. It was inevitable that Barnes and Glover would come back towards the rest of the field and you would have thought someone else would come through the pack to challenge. The Mickelson charge got him to 4 under at one stage with four holes to go but bogeys on 15 and 17 dropping him to -2. Glover on the other hand held his nerve to shoot the magic 73 I spoke of yesterday and relegated Mickelson to another 2nd place finish.

Ricky Barnes unfortunately shot 76 to drop back to tie for second alongside David Duval who had a great back nine. Englishman, Ross Fisher was top European at -1 in a very credible display while Tiger Woods tied 6th with Soren Hansen and Hunter Mahan. It was also a noteworthy performance from Rory McIlroy in only his second major. At Augusta, he finished in the Top 20 and this week he secured a Top 10 finish……surely it is only a matter of time before he actually starts challenging those at the top of the World Rankings.
