Miguel Angel Jimenez defends his title this week at the BMW PGA Championship, in what is sure to be an incredible event. Eight Major Champions lead the way and are joined on the famous West Course by a plethora of Ryder Cup players along with a host of European Tour winners, all vying to add one of golf’s most prestigious titles to their respective CVs alongside a handsome first prize of €750,000 from a total prize fund of €4,500,000.

Henrik Stenson is the joint favourite this week, no surprise really coming off his superb win at Sawgrass. He is at 14/1, the same price as Paul Casey who has fond memories of Wentworth and is having a strong season.  Angel Cabrera is at 16/1 and is trying to emulate Ballesteros, Faldo, Langer and Olazabal in winning the PGA Championship a month after donning the Green Jacket.

At higher prices, Luke Donald (22/1), Robert Karlsson (25/1), Oliver Wilson (33/1) and Ross Fisher (33/1) look like they could each mount a serious challenge. In fact Wilson was runner-up last year with Donald back in third.

Of the outsiders, some incredible prices for Jeev Milkha Singh (60/1), Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (80/1), Rafael Cabrera-Bello (100/1), Darren Clarke (100/1), John Daly (125/1) and Chapchai Nirat (225/1). I actually cant believe how high these prices are to be honest.

Verdict

This week it appears very difficult to look beyond the top 4 and so I will go for Angel Cabrera just ahead of Henrik Stenson, Paul Casey and Luke Donald. While the strength of Stenson, Casey and Donalds iron play is sure to be a feature around Wentworth, Cabrera loves Wentworth and won the event back in 2005. Add to this his length off the tee and it means he should be able to pick up shots quite comfortably on the par 5’s, which could be the difference between winning and loosing (if you agree with me on this, then maybe you might consider Karlsson also?)

Elsewhere, Oliver Wilson (33/1) was a serious consideration but instead, Ross Fisher (33/1) gets the nod, in line again with my theory that the par 5’s will be crucial this week and length may become a significant factor. Finally Rafael Cabrera-Bello appeals to me for a top-10 at 10/1.

Hopefully they will do better than those at last weeks Irish Open!!
