Levet impresses at Open de Espana

Once Thomas Levet got his nose in front at the Open de Espana, he never looked back. His performance on Sunday as he shot 68, was that of an extremely controlled and calm player. There were people beginning to breathe down his neck but it didnt seem to bother him in the slightest. Levet’s 18 under total was 2 shots too good for Fabrizio Zanotti who had a fantastic final round of 65. Thomas Bjorn too had a great final round of 66 to finish T3 alongside defending champion, Peter Lawrie.

Lawrie had been upset by the fact that despite him winning the championship the previous year, there were no pictures in the clubhouse of his achievement and even the announcer on the first tee failed to acknowledge the fact that he was the defending champion. In our opinion Lawrie was absolute right to be annoyed and I think the organisers of the tournament should be ashamed. I am sure if Harrington, Garcia, Westwood or any or these names had won, they would certainly have gotten the recognition but unfortunately, the lesser known names dont always get treated the same. My only regret is that Lawrie didnt go on to win the tournament and really stick it to them. Nevertheless, a top-3 finish was a great effort.

Our tips had mixed weeks. Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano had a rather subdued week finishing on level par and well off the pace. There was always the danger that Castano would struggle this week after playing so much good golf recently and this was probably the case. Once mental tiredness kicks in, shots can very easily be frittered away and Castano began the week with these mistakes littered throughout his card.

Rafael Cabrera-Bello was our other tip and he played some great golf. I thought we were in the money only for Charl Schwartzel to hole a great par putt on 17 and then par 18. This meant that Bello had to settle for 6th and a shot outside the placings. At 40/1 at the beginning of the week, this would have made us a nice few bob. Nevertheless, it gives us even more belief that Bello is a fine young player who we expect to break through with a win. We will be monitoring his progress closely and we advise you to do the same.
