Back from the Brink!
Well its been a while since I wrote here but I can assure you all I have been attending courses and looking for ways to improve the site for you. From now on, we should have a lot more articles focussed on different areas of the game and in particular, we will focus on the various equipment on the market today, in addition to the players that will shape the 2009 season.
Of course that means numerous articles on the legend that is Tiger Woods. Was there ever any doubt he would come back from his long layoff and get back on winning ways almost immediately?? Well if you thought that, you were completely wrong. Tiger is back and raring to go. The question is; Is he better than ever?
Well the greatest thing about Tiger is his ability to hole putts under the most immense pressure. When you really think about how often he holes these crazy 20 footers to make it into play-offs or to win tournaments, it is mind-boggling. This is why anyone playing against Tiger is under so much pressure, they know he will hole putt after putt. This is why his winning streak will go on…and on….and on!
However, at last weeks Arnold Palmer tournament, despite winning, Woods for me displayed many moments of weakness. His long game has not impressed me one bit over the past few years. When you compare him here to the likes of Sergio Garcia or Rory McIlroy I believe they are better than him. Also, last week we saw him throwing a club in disgust after a wayward drive but luckily for him the rough was cut down and he was therefore able to esape many of unusual plaes he found himself in. But what if the rough had been high? It is quite possible that Woods on more than one occassion would have had bogeys, double-bogeys etc. If this had been the case, I believe, judging from his attitude, we may have seen a very frustrated Tiger Woods.
I was annoyed by Woods impetulance on the course last week. His playing partner, Padraig Harrington, must have been aghast. Harrington is too aware of the role model he has become and his status as a global ambassador for the game. In my eyes there is no better icon for the game. He conducts himself in the ideal manner, always has a smile, signs coutless autographs and doesnt have a mob of bodyguards surrounding him! He reminds me of Bernard Langer in his attitude and professionalism.
This is why Im hoping Harrington performs at this years Masters. The thought of Harrington and Woods coming down the stretch Sunday in Augusta is mouth-watering. Add the possibility of McIlroy in the group behind them fighting for the honours and I think you have the ideal tournament…..well for me anyway!
